Adkins was born to a single mother of just a few years, raised in various working-class London neighbourhoods. She loved to sing contemporary pop music as a child , and was able to play the guitar and clarinet. She discovered Etta, a mid-century rhythm-and blues singer in her teens and began to pursue a career a musician. She was attending a secondary school for the visual and performing arts that was funded by the government. One of her friends posted songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. She was soon discovered by record labels and signed an agreement with XL Recordings in 2006.
